UK General Parliamentary Election - 4 July 2024

A General Parliamentary Election will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024.

A Member of Parliament will be elected for Derby North, Derby South and Mid Derbyshire constituencies.

Key dates

Voting in the election

You must be on the electoral register to vote at this election. You can register to vote until 11:50pm on Tuesday 18 June 2024.

If you cannot attend your polling station, you can apply to vote by post before 5pm Wednesday 19 June 2024. Alternatively you may choose to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf, which you can do until 5pm Wednesday 26 June 2024. Your poll card will give details of your polling station, or you can find your polling station by entering your postcode on the Where Do I vote website.

You will need to show photographic ID to vote in the polling station. Find out what ID you can use, or how to get an accepted form of ID on our Voter ID page.

Voting will use the First Past the Post system - the same method used in Parliamentary elections. This differs from previous Police and Crime Commissioner elections which used the Supplementary Vote system.

To vote in the election you must be:

• a British citizen living in the UK or registered to vote as a crown servant or a member of the armed services
• a European Union citizen living in the UK
• a Commonwealth citizen who either does not need leave to be resident in the UK or has the necessary leave and is legally resident in the UK.

Voters in the Mid Derbyshire constituency who live in other local authority areas should contact the Electoral Registration Officer for their area with any queries regarding registering to vote or applying for a postal proxy vote using the following details.

Candidate briefings

Briefings for prospective candidates and agents will take place at:

• 5:30pm on Friday 31 May
• 5:30pm on Thursday 27 June

Candidate briefings will take place via Microsoft Teams. To request an invite, please emaill nominations@derby.gov.uk.

Nominations

Nominations to stand for election as a candidate will be accepted by the Acting Returning Officer at the Council House, Corporation Street, Derby, DE1 2FS between the hours of 10am and 4pm from Tuesday 4 June until close of nominations at 4pm on Friday 7 June. You can request a set of nomination papers by contacting nominations@derby.gov.uk, or you can download a copy of the nomination papers from the Electoral Commission website.

Candidates are encouraged to have their nomination papers informally checked before they are formally submitted. To make an appointment for an informal check, email nominations@derby.gov.uk. We encourage you to submit your nomination papers as soon as possible after 10am on Tuesday 4 June to ensure we have enough time to check them.

​Completed nomination forms must be submitted in person to the Acting Returning Officer at the address and times stated above. Nomination papers must be delivered by hand and cannot be sent by post, email or electronic means.

Deposits

The required £500 deposit must be paid by 4pm on Friday 7 June. We prefer deposits to be paid by bank transfer or card payment, but we also accept legal tender or a banker’s draft. Please let us know at an early stage how you intended to pay the deposit so that there is enough time to make sure it is received by the deadline.

To pay online by credit or debit card:

• Visit the Online payments service page.
• From the ‘all categories’ drop down select ‘Electoral Services’ and press ‘Apply'.
• Scroll down to the ‘Election Deposit’ item and click ‘Item details’.
• Complete the amount (£500) and the party / candidate details.
• Add to basket and check out using a debit or credit card.

A receipt will be sent to the email address you provide.

To pay by bank transfer:

• Transfer the deposit to our account, details of which can be requested by emailing nominations@derby.gov.uk.
• Please include the reference 2425 48737 which will identify your payment as an election deposit.

Election expenses

Election expenses refer to the expenses that are incurred by those standing for election in the running of their campaign.

There are limits on spending for each election that all candidates must adhere to. The Proper Officer in each authority with responsibility for elections is required to retain a copy of each election spending return and declaration, and any accompanying documents, for a period of two years beginning with the date when the return is received. During that period they must make copies available on request for public inspection without charge. There are charges of 20 pence per side applicable for copies of expense information provided.

Who are the candidates?

The Statement of Persons Nominated lists the name and political party or description (if any) of each candidate. The statement will be available on our Election notices 2024 page from 5pm on Friday 7 June 2024.
