By English as an additional language (EAL)
When compared with pupils with English as an additional language, a greater proportion of pupils whose first language was English achieved the expected level.
- Reading– 68% of Derby’s EAL pupils reached the expected standard (nationally 72%). Derby has narrowed its percentage points gap between EAL and non EAL achievement by 4% to 6% (nationally the gap is 4%).
- Derby is ranked 98 out of 151 LAs for the percentage of EAL pupils who reached the expected standard (up 29 places since 2018).
- Writing– 65% of Derby’s EAL pupils reached the expected standard (nationally 68%). Derby has narrowed its percentage points gap between EAL and non EAL achievement by 5% to 3% (nationally the gap is 2%).
- Derby is ranked 97 out of 151 LAs for the percentage of EAL pupils who reached the expected standard (up 33 places since 2018).
- Mathematics – 72% of Derby’s EAL pupils reached the expected standard (nationally 75%). Derby has narrowed its percentage points gap between EAL and non EAL achievement by 6% to 3% (nationally the gap is 1%).

By free school meals eligibility (FSM)
When compared with pupils known to be eligible for free school meals, a greater proportion of pupils who were not eligible for free school meals achieved the expected level.

- Writing- Derby's percentage gap between SEN pupils and all other pupils nationally is the same as last year at 48 percentage points. Nationally the gap is 48 percentage points.

- Mathematics - Derby's percentage gap between SEN pupils and all other pupils nationally has narrowed by 1% to 43 percentage points. Nationally the gap is 43 percentage points.

Year 1 Phonics (2019)
The main measure is the percentage of pupils who took the phonics screening check and met the required standard (Wa). The phonic mark can be between 0 and 40. If a pupil’s mark is at or above the threshold mark they are considered to have reached the required standard. The threshold mark for 2019 is 32.
83% of Derby Yr1 pupils met the required standard (up 1% on last year). This is compared to a national percentage of 82% (same as last year). We are ranked 2nd against our comparator authorities (a rise of 1 place since last year). We are ranked 45th nationally (a rise of 31 places since last year).
91% of Derby end of Yr2 pupils met the required standard (same as last year). This is compared to a national percentage of 91% (a drop of 1% on last year). We are ranked 3rd against our comparator authorities (a rise of 1 place since last year). We are ranked 74th nationally (a rise of 27 places since last year).

By free school meals eligibility (FSM)
Pupils not eligible for free school meals performed better than those eligible for free school meals.
The attainment gap was calculated by national all non FSM pupils minus LA FSM pupils. Derby's FSM/non-FSM attainment gap has narrowed by 4% since 2018 to 10%. The national gap has remained at 14%.
Derby is ranked 32nd out of 151 LAs for the percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals who met the expected standard of Phonics decoding (up by 43 places).
By special educational needs (SEN)
Pupils with SEN performed less well than pupils with no identified SEN. Locally, SEN Support pupils (52%) performed better than those SEN pupils with a statement or EHC plan (19%).
Derby's SEN Support pupils performed 6% above their comparator authorities' and 4% above SEN Support pupils nationally. Derby's EHCP pupils performed 4% above their comparator authorities' but 1% below EHCP pupils nationally. Derby is ranked 40th out of 151 LAs for the percentage of SEN pupils who met the expected standard of Phonics decoding.
The attainment gap analysis was calculated by all pupils nationally minus all SEN pupils. Derby's SEN/non-SEN attainment gap has widened by 4% since 2018 to 35%. The national gap has widened by 1% to 39%.

- Reading progress score – we have a progress score of -0.3 (up on 2018 by 0.3). We are ranked 4th against our comparator authorities and 113th nationally;
- Writing progress score – we have a progress score of 0.0 (up on 2018 by 0.1). We are ranked 3rd against our comparator authorities and 78th nationally;
- Mathematics progress score - we have a progress score of -0.3 (up on 2018 by 0.1). We are ranked 6th against our comparator authorities and 97th nationally.

Locally, a higher proportion of pupils whose first language is English achieved the expected standard than pupils whose first language was other than English (4% gap) compared to a national gap of 1% and a comparator authorities' average gap of 3%.
Derby is ranked 127th out of 151 LAs for the percentage of EAL pupils who achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics (up 4 places). Derby's EAL/non-EAL attainment gap has narrowed by 2% since 2018 (compared to national gap narrowing by 1% and the comparator authorities' gap narrowing by 1%).
Pupils whose first language is other than English make better progress in writing and mathematics (0.8 in writing and 0.6 in mathematics) compared to pupils with similar prior attainment whose first language is English (-0.3 and -0.6 respectively). The higher progress scores for pupils whose first language is other than English may reflect improvements in their English language skills and consequently bigger relative gains in attainment.
By disadvantaged pupils
When compared with disadvantaged pupils, a greater proportion of pupils who were not disadvantaged achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics. Attainment gap analysis is calculated by all national non-disadvantaged pupils minus LA disadvantaged pupils (24% gap in Derby and 20% nationally). Derby is ranked 108th out of 151 LAs for the percentage of disadvantaged pupils who achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics (up 12 places). Derby's disadvantaged pupils/all other pupils attainment gap has narrowed since 2018 by 1%. Our comparator authorities' gap has remained the same and the national gap has widened by 1%.
Disadvantaged pupils make less progress in reading, writing and mathematics than all other pupils with similar prior attainment. Locally, the progress score for disadvantaged pupils is -0.9 in reading, -0.5 in writing and -0.9 in mathematics (compared to nationally, all other pupils 0.3, 0.3 and 0.4 respectively).
By free school meals eligibility (FSM)
When compared with FSM pupils, a greater proportion of pupils who were not FSM achieved in the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics. Attainment gap analysis is calculated by all national non-FSM pupils minus LA FSM pupils (24% gap in Derby and 21% nationally). Derby is ranked 101st out of 151 LAs for the percentage of pupils who are eligible for free school meals who achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics (a drop of 12 places). Derby's FSM/non-FSM attainment gap has narrowed by 1% since 2018. The national gap and comparator authority gap has also narrowed by 1%.
Free school meals pupils made less progress in reading, writing and mathematics than all other pupils with the same prior attainment. Locally, the progress scores are -1.0 in reading, -0.4 in writing and -0.9 in mathematics (compared to all other pupils nationally 0.2, 0.2 and 0.2 respectively).
By special educational needs (SEN)
Pupils with SEN continue to perform less well than pupils with no identified SEN. Of all reported characteristics, the difference between the comparison groups is largest when looking at SEN. In Derby, 21% of pupils with SEN reached the expected standard (22% nationally), compared to 71% of pupils with no identified SEN (74% nationally). Derby is ranked 96th out of 151 LAs for the percentage of SEN pupils who achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics (up 14 places).
Pupils with SEN make less progress in all subjects compared to pupils with no identified SEN. For Derby's SEN Support pupils, their progress scores were -1.6 in reading, -1.9 in writing and -1.3 in mathematics (compared to -1.0, -1.7 and -1.0 nationally). For Derby's EHCP pupils, their progress scores were -3.4 in reading, -4.3 in writing and -4.2 in mathematics (compared to -3.6, -4.3 and -4.0 nationally).
By ethnic groups
Attainment at the end of KS2 varies between different ethnic groups. Consistent with previous years, Chinese pupils are the highest achieving group (100% Derby, 80% nationally and 80% comparator authorities' average). Locally, pupils from a white heritage or a black heritage are the lowest performing groups (60%, compared to 64% nationally). Chinese pupils make the most progress in all subjects compared to other groups (in Derby, reading 2.2, writing 1.4 and mathematics 4.7 (compared to 1.5, 1.8 and 4.4 nationally). Locally, pupils from a white heritage are the lowest performing group in reading (-0.4). Pupils from a white or black heritage are the lowest performing groups in writing (-0.3). Pupils from a mixed heritage are the lowest performing group in mathematics (-0.6).

- Progress 8 – Derby’s average down by 0.05 to -0.24. Nationally the result has dropped by 0.01 to -0.03. Derby is ranked 129th out of 151 LAs nationally (down 11 places on last year). We are ranked 11th against our comparator authorities (down 2 places on last year);
- Attainment 8 – Derby’s average has improved by 0.1 to 43.3 Nationally the result has improved by 0.2 to 44.7. Derby has improved by 2 places in the national ranking to 130th. We have remained in 10th place against our comparator authorities;
- % achieving English and mathematics (strong pass) – Derby’s average has down by 0.1% to 38.1%. Nationally the result has dropped by 0.1% to 40.1%. Derby has improved by 7 places in the national ranking to 114th. We have remained in 7th place against our comparator authorities;
- English Baccalaureate average points score (APS) – Derby’s average has improved by 0.04 to 3.83 Nationally the result has improved by 0.02 to 3.87. Derby has improved by 5 places in the national rankings to 105th. We have remained in 6th place against our comparator authorities.

By English as an additional language (EAL)
The average Attainment 8 score of those with English as an additional language was lower than those with English as a first language (by 2.6 points). But their average Progress 8 score continued to be much higher compared to those with English as a first language (by 0.55 locally and by 0.59 nationally).
The achievement of pupils with English as an additional language was lower than pupils with English as a first language for the achieving a strong pass in English and maths (by 7.0% locally). Nationally, the gap is minimal between the two groups (by 0.6%).

Attainment was lower for disadvantaged pupils compared to all other pupils across all headline measures, consistent with previous years.
