Since 2019, school pupils from all ethnic groups have seen a drop in their performance.
- Reading – Derby school pupils from a black ethnic origin performed above the national average (by 4%). Reading has seen a drop of 12% by Derby school pupils of a mixed ethnic background (compared to a drop of 7% nationally).
- Writing – Derby school pupils from a black ethnic origin equalled the performance of the national average (59%). All other ethnic groups were below the national average. Derby school pupils from a mixed ethnic background have seen a drop of 17% in writing (compared to a drop of 11% nationally).
- Mathematics – Derby school pupils from an Asian ethnic origin performed above the national average (by 1%). Mathematics has seen a drop of 12% by Derby school pupils of a black ethnic background (compared to a drop of 10% nationally).
By English as an additional language (EAL)
When compared with pupils with English as an additional language, a greater proportion of pupils whose first language was English achieved the expected level.
- Reading – 60% of Derby schools' EAL pupils reached the expected standard (nationally 64%). Derby schools have narrowed their percentage points gap between EAL and non-EAL achievement by 1% to 5% (nationally the gap is 4%). Derby schools are ranked 107th out of 152 LAs for the percentage of EAL pupils who reached the expected standard (down 9 places since 2019).
- Writing – 53% of Derby schools' EAL pupils reached the expected standard (nationally 57%). Derby schools have narrowed their percentage points gap between EAL and non-EAL achievement by 2% to 1% (nationally the gap is 1%). Derby schools are ranked 104th out of 152 LAs for the percentage of EAL pupils who reached the expected standard (down 7 places since 2019).
- Mathematics – 65% of Derby schools' EAL pupils reached the expected standard (nationally 67%). Derby schools have narrowed their percentage points gap between EAL and non-EAL achievement by 1% to 2% (nationally the gap is 1%). By special educational needs (SEN)
Pupils with SEN continue to perform less well than pupils with no identified SEN. SEN support pupils perform better than those SEN with a statement or EHC plan.

- Reading – Derby schools' percentage gap between SEN pupils and all other pupils nationally has narrowed by 3% to 42%. Nationally the gap is 41%. Derby schools are ranked 74th out of 152 LAs for the percentage of pupils with special educational needs who reached the expected standard (same as in 2019).
- Writing - Derby schools' percentage gap between SEN pupils and all other pupils nationally has narrowed by 5% to 43%. Nationally the gap is 41%. Derby schools are ranked 92nd out of 152 LAs for the percentage of pupils with special educational needs who reached the expected standard (a drop of 13 places since 2019).
- Mathematics - Derby schools' percentage gap between SEN pupils and all other pupils nationally has narrowed by 8% to 35%. Nationally the gap is 39%. Derby schools are ranked 30th out of 152 LAs for the percentage of pupils with special educational needs who reached the expected standard (up by 39 places since 2019).
Year 1 Phonics (2022)
The main measure is the percentage of pupils who took the phonics screening check and met the required standard (Wa). The phonic mark can be between 0 and 40. If a pupil’s mark is at or above the threshold mark they are considered to have reached the required standard. The threshold mark is 32.
74% of Derby schools’ Yr1 pupils met the required standard (down 9% since 2019). This is compared to a national percentage of 75% (down 7% since 2019). Derby schools' EAL / non-EAL attainment gap has widened by 4% since 2019 (compared to national gap widening by 4% and the comparator authorities' gap narrowing by 2%).
Pupils whose first language is other than English made better progress in writing (0.4) compared to pupils with similar prior attainment whose first language is English (-0.8). The higher progress scores for pupils whose first language is other than English may reflect improvements in their English language skills and consequently bigger relative gains in attainment.

When compared with disadvantaged pupils, a greater proportion of pupils who were not disadvantaged achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics. Attainment gap analysis is calculated by all national non-disadvantaged pupils minus LA disadvantaged pupils (26% gap in Derby schools and 23% nationally). Derby schools are ranked 91st out of 152 LAs for the percentage of disadvantaged pupils who achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics (up 17 places). Derby schools are ranked 97th out of 152 LAs for the percentage of SEN pupils who achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics (down 1 place).
Pupils with SEN make less progress in all subjects compared to pupils with no identified SEN. For Derby schools' SEN Support pupils, their progress scores were -1.9 in reading, -1.8 in writing and -1.4 in mathematics (compared to -1.2, -1.6 and -0.9 nationally). For Derby schools' EHCP pupils, their progress scores were -3.7 in reading, -3.7 in writing and -3.3 in mathematics (compared to -4.5, -4.1 and -3.9 nationally).
By ethnic groups
Attainment at the end of KS2 varies between different ethnic groups. Chinese pupils are the highest achieving group (67% Derby schools, 70% nationally and 69% comparator authorities' average). Derby school pupils from a black Caribbean ethnic group achieved better than the national average (by 9%).
Derby school pupils from a Traveller of Irish heritage made the most reading progress (5.0, compared to -1.5 nationally). Caution should be taken with this figure as the cohort size is very small. Derby school pupils from a Bangladeshi heritage make the least progress (-4.9, compared to 1.2 nationally).

- Attainment 8 – Derby’s average has improved by 0.1 to 43.3 Nationally the result has improved by 0.2 to 44.7. Derby has improved by 2 places in the national ranking to 130th. We have remained in 10th place against our comparator authorities;
- % achieving English and mathematics (strong pass) – Derby’s average has down by 0.1% to 38.1%. Nationally the result has dropped by 0.1% to 40.1%. Derby has improved by 7 places in the national ranking to 114th. We have remained in 7th place against our comparator authorities;

The average Attainment 8 score of those with English as an additional language was lower than those with English as a first language (by 2.6 points). But their average Progress 8 score continued to be much higher compared to those with English as a first language (by 0.55 locally and by 0.59 nationally).
The achievement of pupils with English as an additional language was lower than pupils with English as a first language for the achieving a strong pass in English and maths (by 7.0% locally). Nationally, the gap is minimal between the two groups (by 0.6%).
