Livewell’s volunteer programme receives shining accolade!

Livewell’s volunteer programme has been recognised as a leading local example during National Volunteer Week.

The Derby City Council run service was awarded joint first place in the Community Action category of the Shining Star awards on Tuesday 4th June at St Martin’s Church and Community Centre in Allenton.  The celebration event, which combined a volunteering fair was organised by Derby Community Action, Derby Homes, Move More Derby and Derby Housing Advice.

Livewell Coordinators, Paul McGinty and Dawn Lee develop and run Livewell’s volunteer scheme which has recruited more than 45 volunteers in the last year, giving 2500 hours in total.

As former clients, volunteers work with the Livewell team through a variety of roles where they share their experiences to help inspire and motivate new clients joining the healthy lifestyle service in different communities in Derby.

Roles include leading walks, cycle rides and jogging groups, supporting at Livewell’s health hubs by taking blood pressures and  meeting/greeting new clients, and buddying new clients at exercise classes.

Volunteers are offered development opportunities such as First Aid courses and training in taking blood pressure, jog/cycle/walk leadership and behaviour change coaching.

Volunteers are central to Livewell’s future sustainability to extend the reach and impact of the service across the city.  As a team of 19 staff, we value the brilliant contribution volunteers make in supporting people in Derby to be healthier.
