High Five to 5!

On Monday Derby City Council recognised the best of High Five to 5 businesses at the High Five to 5 awards.

Since the introduction of the Food Standards Agency’s National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) in 2012 all food businesses are given a rating of 0-5 whenever they are inspected by our Food and Safety team.

80% of Derby businesses hold a 5 rating (compared to 65% nationally), but it isn’t so easy to maintain it consistently.  There are currently over 2000 food businesses in Derby and these awards were to celebrate and recognise the 400 businesses who have achieved a 5 rating for at least their last three inspections.

Around 80 businesses, varying from a local church lunch club to a mobile trader, to a local school to a takeaway business, who have received four or more consecutive 5 ratings were invited to attend the event to receive a certificate and to talk to experts from the Food and Safety team as well as Trading Standards and other agencies whilst the remaining 320 have been sent a certificate to display at their premises.

I hope this will be the first of many ‘High Five to 5’ awards giving us the opportunity to honour the achievement of Derby’s most dedicated food providers.  These businesses really make a difference to Derby, giving the public confidence to eat out and shop safely. One thing I’m particularly thrilled about is that over 60% are voluntary organisations, independent traders and regional companies rather than the big multi-national we might expect which speaks volumes about the hard work and dedication of these businesses.
