Intensive Wyvern works to commence ahead of busy Christmas period

With over 18 million vehicles using the road each year, the A52 Wyvern Transport Improvement Scheme is a key infrastructure project for our city, which will bring significant benefits to a congested part of Derby’s principal road network, offering improved access to the city and supporting wider economic growth.

Following an accelerated works programme over the summer period, drivers have benefited from the new third lane on the westbound carriageway of the A52 and the opening of the improved realigned slip road, making a smoother transition onto the Wyvern.  Both the Derwent Parade and Stanier Way roundabouts have also been open with single lane traffic.

Over the next two weeks there will be another intensive period of work to construct Derwent Parade roundabout, allowing more space to open up as the scheme progresses into the next phase.  As a result, there will be overnight closures each week night from Monday 11th to Friday 22nd November, between the hours of 8.00pm and 6.00am.  These closures and associated night working are part of a coordinated push to ensure we can open up the maximum network capacity for local businesses over the Christmas period, and enhance pedestrian safety during the darker evenings.

Whilst these works take place, there will be no access onto the Wyvern from the eastbound A52 carriageway.  Drivers will need to access the site from the westbound off-slip.  The temporary signals on Pullman Road will be moved to The Sidings, and new temporary 2-way signals will be in place on the bus lane along Chequers Road to allow access to Burger King, Pizza Hut and KFC, during the overnight closures.

Advance warning signs have been installed, and signed diversions will be in place. More information on the works and diversions will be made available on our website.

Local businesses have been made aware of the closures, and a drop in event has been arranged for all Wyvern and Pride Park businesses to attend to discuss the works.  This is taking place on Monday 11th November at Pride Park Stadium.

This is particularly crucial to support local businesses and to keep our city moving over the busy Christmas period and we’ve been working hard on a plan to allow that to happen.
