Support and appreciation shown for Derby refuse teams

Hundreds of Derby residents are showing their support and appreciation for refuse workers in the city in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the outbreak and lockdown imposed by the government, our waste collection crews have worked hard to continue collection of bins to ensure there isn’t a build-up on the streets.

After a difficult week with staff shortages, and the subsequent suspension of brown bin collections, the team has now been inundated with thank you notes, cards, freshly baked cakes and other treats left on bins across the city.

Councillor Jonathan Smale, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetpride commented:

We’ve been completely overwhelmed to see residents coming out to thank these essential workers. I want to thank each and every one of you that has taken the time to show your support for our teams. It’s not easy to have to come into work every day when the whole world is in lockdown, especially when you work in a service that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves – these guys are unsung heroes. They’re doing a stellar job and my thanks goes out to them.

Dan, is a refuse collector who has been working throughout the outbreak. He said:

It’s been a massively humbling and morale boosting experience to receive these messages of thanks. It’s nice to be reminded of how much we are appreciated and a heartfelt thank you goes out to all.
