A project to refresh the surface of some roads in Derby will get underway from Monday 13 July.
So, what will we be doing?
It’s a process called Surface Dressing. In the same way you might give your living room a coat of paint, we’ll be giving road surfaces a new layer of tar and chippings to make it safer for road users. Surface dressing seals the road and reduces the likelihood of potholes forming in the cold, wet winter months. The treatment will also restore skid resistance to improve road safety.
Unlike resurfacing, the work can be done quickly and safely without needing to put road closures in place. However, we do need good weather to be able to complete the work.
The project is expected to last two weeks and will see the following roads being treated:
- Grange Road
- Swarkestone Road
- Derby Road
- Manor Road (Southbound only)
- Morley Road, from Wood Road to Acorn Way
- Normanton Road, from Mill Hill Lane to Lara Croft Way
A team from Kier Highway Services will carry out this work on behalf of the Council. The team will work on weekdays from 9.30am – 3.30pm and 6.30 – 10.00pm and during weekends from 8.00am – 10.00pm
Morley Road will require some additional work before surface dressing. Our team will need to plane off the current surface in preparation for the new treatment. This work is planned to start on Monday 13 July and will take most of the week. The road will be closed each weekday between 9.30am 3.00pm to allow us to work safely and efficiently. The diversion route will be Acorn Way, Derby Road, Nottingham Road, Chaddesden Lane.
All residents directly affected by the work will be notified by Kier Highway Services in the next week and also the day before they plan to start work. Letters will be sent to residents on the roads listed above as well as smaller side streets along these routes. We will keep everyone aware on social media of how the project is progressing, and there will be notices on all the main thoroughfares to keep road-users informed.
Traffic management measures will be in place where appropriate (stop/go boards and lane closures). Roads will be kept open as much as is possible, and road markings will be replaced approximately one week after the surface dressing treatment.
How can residents help?
- Please do not park on the road between 7.00am and 7.00pm on the day of the work and the day after (when the road will be swept). Parked vehicles will delay the work and your vehicle could be damaged.
- For the safety of everyone, please keep children and pets away from the machines whilst the work is taking place.
- When the work is finished try to avoid sudden braking or steering manoeuvres on the new surface and reduce your speed.
- All road markings will be replaced around one week after the work is finished so please take care at junctions.

I’d encourage motorists to please drive carefully and observe the slow speed signs, particularly during the first few days after application of the treatment. This programme represents a key part of our approach to managing the highway network. By treating the right roads with the right treatment at the right time will represent better value for money and maintaining the road assets to their most optimum condition.
