The annual electoral canvass takes place each year to make sure that local residents electoral registration details are up to date.
Residents may have already received a text, email or letter asking them to complete their details but for those households who have not yet done so there may be a knock on the door during September or October as our Electoral Register canvassers begin visiting households in Derby to help residents make sure they are registered to vote.
All canvassers will carry Derby City Council photo ID and will be happy to show it through a window if necessary, to maintain social distancing. Most visits will take place in the evening and at weekends, as these are times when most people are likely to be at home.
In some cases, canvassers may contact a household by telephone rather than in person. They will offer to confirm the information on the Electoral Register is correct and offer to help register any new residents.
Annual Canvass letters were sent to properties in Derby in early August. Households can avoid a visit if they still have their letter by visiting https://householdresponse.com/Derby. They will be asked for their security code from the letter.
Emily Feenan, Electoral Registration Officer at Derby City Council said:
We want to make sure that every eligible resident retains their right to vote and this means we have to contact every address in the city. This year’s canvass, which we have to carry out by law, is taking place during a challenging public health situation. We are working to ensure that we take account of public health guidelines, including the continued importance of social distancing. We’d like to thank people who have responded to our earlier communications and confirmed their details and encourage people still to use the online option if possible. This will save us time, money and require less face to face interactions by reducing the number of home visits we need to make.
