It’s become more important than ever to make sure that we’re being safe, especially when out and about after dark or near naked flames

Halloween is becoming bigger and bigger each year, with children of all ages getting dressed up and celebrating with parties or trick or treating with family members. But with all this spooky fun, it’s become more important than ever to make sure that we’re being safe, especially when out and about after dark or near naked flames.

Here are some helpful tips to stay safe and have a scarily good time:

  • Always purchase Halloween costumes from a reputable retailer
  • Look out for a CE mark and read the safety instructions and warnings on fancy dress costumes
  • Teach your children to ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ in the event of clothes catching fire
  • Keep a close eye on them on Halloween night if they are trick or treating or near naked flames
  • Use LED, battery operated tea lights and candles in your pumpkins to minimise the risk of fire
  • Wear reflective clothing or carry a torch if you’re heading out trick or treating in the dark
  • Plan a route for your children before you leave the house and make sure they know where they are going.
  • If you suspect that a product you’ve bought may not be safe, please report it to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 040506 or report it online.
