  • About the scheme

About the scheme

The A52 Wyvern Transport Improvement Scheme will bring about network management improvements on the A52 Brian Clough Way and in the area around the Wyvern Retail Park and Pride Park. The scheme will help to reduce congestion, improve journey times and reliability, provide safer travel opportunities, increase sustainable travel and also support wider economic growth.

Advanced work on the scheme started in February 2017 and the main construction works started in October 2017.

The main works contract was awarded to Galliford Try in October 2017 under the Midlands Highways Alliance framework. Galliford Try are Associate Members of the Considerate Constructors Scheme which measures site performance against appearance, community, environment, safety and workforce.

Funding towards the scheme has come from:

  • D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP); promoting economic growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Contribution of £6.7 million.
  • Highways England Growth and Housing Fund, which provides financial contributions towards the cost of road improvements that are needed for new developments, which promise timely delivery of homes and jobs. Contribution of £2.6 million.
  • National Productivity Investment Fund from the Department for Transport. Contribution of £669,000.

David Ralph, Chief Executive of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, said:

A transport network which functions well is essential for the D2N2 LEP area to continue to grow its economy. In addition to enabling the free flow of goods and services, and commuters, good transport routes increase the accessibility of locations, making them of more interest for future residential and commercial development. The A52 is a key route into and through the LEP’s area, which is why we are investing significantly in its improvement.

Highways England Asset Manager, Rajinder Kaur, said:

We worked closely with Derby City Council and the D2N2 LEP to secure a £2.6m investment in the A52 Wyvern Transport Improvement Scheme, alongside additional public and private sector contributions. This scheme when completed will provide a capacity enhancement to the strategic road network, allowing the Derby Triangle development site to move forward and enabling the creation of up to 3,000 new jobs.
