City climate actions
Derby Sustainability Board
The Derby Sustainability Board is a team of people from all around Derby who care about the planet and want to help make the city a better, greener place.
It includes people from:
- The NHS (the health service),
- Large and small businesses,
- Community groups, and volunteers.
The Council helps organise the meetings but doesn’t run the group. Everyone joins voluntarily and meets at least four times a year to talk about how Derby can fight climate change and become more sustainable.
They work together as “TeamDerby” to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which are 17 goals to make the world a safer, fairer, and healthier place.
What does the Board do?
- Decides on the big goals for a greener Derby.
- Picks important projects to focus on what will help the most.
- Tracks progress to see if things are improving.
- Shares updates with other local leaders and ask for help if needed.
- Reviews their plans every few years to keep things on track.
Working with other local authorities
Derby City Council isn’t working alone to fight climate change — we’re teaming up with other councils nearby. We share ideas, plan together, and combine resources to make a bigger impact across the whole East Midlands region.
Innovate UK Fast Followers Project
This project brings together councils in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The goal is to help people, businesses, and communities understand how their everyday actions affect the planet.
The project wants to help everyone:
- Use less energy
- Create less pollution
- Save money
- Breathe cleaner air
- Live healthier lives
It’s part of a UK-wide plan to reach net zero, which means not adding more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than we can remove.
Derby and Derbyshire (D2) Energy Action Group
This is a group of councils in Derbyshire who are working together to:
- Reach their net zero goals
- Support their promise to tackle climate change
- Follow the region’s energy strategy
Derby’s Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP)
The LAEP is a research project to assess the best way to use cleaner energy across Derby and reduce CO2e emissions to net zero. The plan will look at:
- How we use energy now
- How we can use less gas and electricity
- How we can use cleaner fuels like hydrogen
The LAEP will create a 3D map that shows areas of high energy use and what changes will need to be made to reduce energy usage (such as installing better insulation or low-carbon heating) and what it could cost to make those changes.
Let’s Talk Derby Climate
As a city, we’ll need to work together to reduce our carbon footprint and become net zero. As part of that, we need to have conversations and hear what residents and businesses have to say.
We’ve created Let’s Talk Derby Climate where we’ll host regular polls, surveys and other engagement events so we can hear your thoughts and ideas about Derby’s journey to net zero.
