How to store your bins
You’re responsible for putting your bins out correctly and bringing them back in after collection - unless you have an assisted bin collection.
Here’s what to do:
- Put bins out only after 5pm the night before, or by 6:30am on collection day.
- Take your bin back in by 12noon the day after collection.
- Bins should be stored within your property boundary.
- Leaving bins permanently on pavements is not allowed and may result in enforcement action.
Bin storage for private homes
If you have outdoor space, you must store your bins there between collections – not on the street.
It’s your responsibility to make sure you can access your storage space. If access is blocked for example, by a neighbour’s gate, you may need to resolve this through civil action. Keeping bins on the street is not a suitable alternative.
Bin storage for rented homes
If you rent your home, you're still responsible for removing bins from the street and storing them properly.
If you’re unable to access your bin storage due to things like locked alleyways or blocked access, contact your landlord or letting agent to resolve the issue. Ignoring it may result in fines.
Bin storage for shared homes (HMOs and flats)
Most shared properties have a designated area for bins within the boundary. If access is suitable, collection crews will return bins to this point. If not, residents must put bins out and bring them back in by themselves.
All occupants are equally responsible for what goes in the bin, putting the bin out on the right day and removing from the street after collection, so it’s important to work together.
If you can’t access the bin area, contact your landlord or managing agent.
