Darley Abbey to The Silk Mill (Package 1)
Works commenced in earnest in October 2015, with the excavation of a number of archaeological trenches upstream of St. Mary’s Bridge.
The archaeological investigation was followed by demolition, site preparation and flood defence construction carried out from December 2015 to 2019.
There is a mixture of flood alleviation measures; sheet piles, cladded and glazed top walls and the occasional bund. These have been designed to be as sympathetic as possible for the urban to green space to industrial landscape, located within the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site buffer zone, Scheduled Monuments and conservation areas.
Remaining works to be completed include some sports provision and landscape reinstatements, public art and interpretation.
