Derby Libraries is committed to digitally supporting and connecting our communities so we are pleased to announce that Alvaston, Mickleover, Normanton and Riverside libraries are now open for public computer use only. Alvaston, Mickleover and Riverside also have public WiFi available for people who prefer to use their own device.
This is a vital service for people who do not have access to the internet so we are prioritising sessions for people who need to complete benefit claim forms, job applications, homework, and other essential tasks. Please do not book computers or WiFi for social media, games or watching videos.
To use a computer or library WiFi, please phone the library during opening hours to book a session in advance. On the day of your booking, please arrive no more than five minutes before your session. While in the library we should all continue to follow COVID guidelines by keeping our distance, washing our hands before and after our visit and wearing a face covering, if we can.
Sessions are limited to one hour, to ensure as many people as possible can have access. Printing is available but payment is by card only. If you are aged 13 or under, you will need to be accompanied by a parent or carer. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide one-to-one help for you on the computer.
At all four libraries, the current click and collect arrangements for borrowing and returning books and other items will continue when Derby moves into Tier 3. Members can choose and reserve items, and arrange collection, by accessing the online library catalogue.
When the country first went into lockdown in March, the return date for all library books was extended. These books, and any borrowed before 12 September, are now due back before 7 December 2020.
Customers who have books borrowed before March will shortly receive reminders to renew or return their books on or before 7 December. Books can be returned during opening hours, and customers can renew their books online or by phone. Late fees may apply if books are not renewed or returned by this date.
The Home Library Service continues to operate, delivering and collecting pre-ordered books from Care Homes and vulnerable people living at home.
Derby Local Studies and Family History Library is currently closed to members of the public but is taking enquiries by phone, text and email.

The spring lockdown saw a surge in the number of people joining Derby’s eLibrary. All library members can borrow eBooks and Audiobooks, and read electronic newspapers and magazines for free using apps that you can download to your device. Customers can join the library online at the inDerby website to get access to these great services.
