Upcoming road resurfacing schemes

We know that having safe, smooth roads is important to residents. That’s why we’re investing an additional £9million into our highways over the next two years.

Over the last few months, we’ve completed a number of significant schemes in the city some of which, we’re asking you to have your say on.

The next series of roads will be getting resurfaced, bringing benefits to local areas.

The following roads are being resurfaced from Monday 20 July:

• Taddington Road – Work will start on Monday 20 July and will take approximately two weeks to complete
• Mayfield Road (Sussex Circus to the junction with Denbeigh Street only) – Work will start on Monday 20 July and should take three days to complete
• Grafton Street – Work will start on Wednesday 22 July and should take three days to complete

The work will be completed by Thomas Bow Ltd, on behalf of Derby City Council and will include the replacement of the road surface and road markings.  These busy roads have seen significant deterioration, so we’ll be putting an extra layer (called binder course) under the road surface to make them stronger and safer.

Councillor Jonathan Smale, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Public Protection and Streetpride commented:

We’ve invested additional funding into our highways budget to enable us to undertake more of these essential resurfacing schemes. We know that roadworks can be disruptive, but we hope that residents agree that the long-term benefits to their neighbourhood are worth the short-term disruption and that the work is very much needed.

We appreciate this type of work is disruptive and journeys will be delayed.  Our main aim is to get the work completed as quickly and safely as possible.  We will do our best to make sure all properties directly affected by the work can be accessed with minimum disruption.  We will not be able to meet everyone’s personal requirements, so you may experience some delays in gaining access.  Please be patient.  There will be Traffic Marshals to direct traffic and assist you.  Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

During COVID-19, it is important that we maintain our road networks too, so that essential supplies as well as emergency workers can travel to where they are needed most.  We have worked closely with our contractor to make sure that we can resume work where it is safe and appropriate to do so.  The contractor is working to Public Health England and Construction Industry Council guidance on social distancing and safety operations.  Please note that some highway activities will be difficult to ensure social distancing at all times.  The contractor has provided us with details of how they will work through these as safely as possible.
