Following the successful installation of the new A52 footbridge, alongside the continuing improvement scheme, a major resurfacing programme is to be completed as we continue to make this key route safe and serviceable.
The road resurfacing between Pentagon to Raynesway is scheduled to take place over the next few weeks and will complete the length of the city maintained section of the A52 that has not been completed as part of the Wyvern Transport Improvement Scheme.
Work will be completed by Thomas Bow Ltd on behalf of Derby City Council and will be completed in phases:
Phase 1 – From Raynesway to Wyvern – Inbound
- A road closure will be in place from 8.00pm on Friday 5th June to 6.00am Monday 8th June
- Inbound only will be closed
- A total of 4620sqm to be planed and resurfaced and new road markings applied
- Some repairs to gullies and ironwork will also be completed
Phase 2 – From Wyvern to Raynesway – Outbound
- A road closure will be in place from 8.00pm on Friday 12th June to 6.00am Monday 15th June
- Both directions will be closed
- A total of 3190sqm to be planed and resurfaced and new road markings applied
- Some repairs to gullies and ironwork will also be completed
Phase 3 – From Wyvern to Pentagon – Inbound and Phase 4 From Pentagon to Wyvern – Outbound
- Three weeks of weeknight closures will be in place in both directions from 8.00pm on Monday 29th June to 6.00am Friday 17th July
- Phase 3 – a total of 10,564sqm to be repaired. This section requires additional treatment, including a lower binder course and a geogrid to the give the road structure additional rigidity for its expected traffic use. All road markings will be replaced
- Phase 4 – a total of 9,760sqm to be planed and resurfaced and new road markings applied, with some repairs to gullies and ironwork.
- All work will be completed overnight and made safe in the morning, prior to reopening for traffic
- During the construction of Phase 3, the road surface will be temporary. A 40mph speed limit will be in place and travelling public are asked to drive with caution
- All gullies will be cleansed on each phase and ensure they are running smoothly
With all phases we hope to have the work completed before the stated opening times, subject to good weather and no unforeseen circumstances. An additional closure for the weekend commencing 19th June has also been scheduled as a contingency only, for either the resurfacing work or the Wyvern Transport Improvement Scheme, should any work not be completed to schedule.
During COVID-19, it is important that we maintain our road networks too, so that essential supplies as well as emergency workers can travel to where they are needed most. We have worked closely with our contractor to make sure that we can complete work where it is safe and appropriate to do so. The contractor is working to Public Health England and Construction Industry Council guidance on social distancing and safety operations.
Cllr Jonathan Smale, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetpride said:
This vital resurfacing work is being funded from the additional £9m awarded for highways maintenance by this cabinet in March. Over the next two years we will be able to maximise the number of improvements we can complete to the Councils most valuable assets. As always, we thank you for your cooperation and patience and hope you agree this much needed improvement work will make a vast difference to this key route into the city.
