Derby City Council, with regret, has announced the cancellation of this year’s Market Place Remembrance service but is planning for Derby residents to be able to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice from their home environment with an online, pre-recorded service to be broadcast on Remembrance Sunday 8th November at 11.00am.
Derby Cathedral is also offering citizens the opportunity to light a candle of remembrance at Derby Cathedral in the week prior to Remembrance Sunday.
Sadly, the coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to the traditional Remembrance service, which sees residents turn out in their thousands to watch veterans proudly parade to the war memorial in the Market Place, alongside armed forces cadets as well as cubs, brownies, scouts and guides. The decision has been made in consultation with the Royal British Legion, Derby Cathedral and other partnerships traditionally engaged in this Act of Remembrance.
Details of the service are still being finalised but will be announced in due course.
Councillor Mick Barker, Cabinet Member for Governance and Licensing said:
It is of course very disappointing that we’ve had to cancel the traditional Market Place service but our priority at this time must be to keep people safe in their home environment. We are hopeful that our plans to safely pre-record a service will all come together in the next couple of weeks so our veterans and the people of Derby will be able to pay their respects from a safe and Covid compliant environment.
