Small businesses had a difficult 2020, but this weekend we’re getting ready to celebrate them again on Small Business Saturday.
To mark the event on Saturday 4 December, Derby City Council are offering free parking at Chapel Street car park to help residents and workers travel and shop safely in the city centre, however shoppers are also encouraged to support the local businesses in their community.
The national event is now in its ninth year, with last year’s edition seeing a record-breaking £1.1 billion spent with small businesses across the UK. This year shoppers are encouraged to support all types of small businesses in stores, online, and in offices.
Shoppers are encouraged to take a lateral flow test before heading out and remember that face coverings are now mandatory in shops and on public transport unless you have an exemption.
Councillor Steve Hassall, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Decarbonisation, Strategic Planning and Transportation, said:
“After a challenging 18 months, it’s been great to see the support for our local businesses since lockdown restrictions eased in the Summer. We should continue to celebrate our high streets and small businesses and not take them for granted, not just those in the city centre but those local to us as well.
“Small businesses are a cornerstone of our local communities, and this event celebrates the contribution independent retailers and services make to our city. We should continue to celebrate our high streets and small businesses and not take them for granted.
“Derby has a fantastic small business offer and I would encourage everyone to make every effort to support our local small businesses not only this weekend but ongoing and make a concerted effort to appreciate the value they give.
“If you are heading into the city centre this weekend, I would encourage you to do so safely by following any guidelines that are in place, including wearing face coverings in shops if you can.”
