From Saturday 29 May to Thursday 3 June, Derby Book Festival will hold Family Fun Days with book-related activities at parks across the city from 11am – 3pm:

  • Saturday 29 May - Darley Park
  • Mon 31 May - Derby Arboretum
  • Tues 1 June - Markeaton Park
  • Wed 2 June - Sinfin Moor Park
  • Thurs 3 June - Alvaston Park.

There will be free events including an Animal Book Trail around each park and Wild and Wonderful Art (with a competition for children to win a copy of Wild Things by Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield), and a free collage activity at Derby Arboretum.

Ticketed events include a Fairy Tale Puppet Show for children aged between 4-7 (and their parents) twice a day (£3.50 each). Local poet Les Baynton will hold two Children’s Poetry Writing Workshops at Markeaton Park (Tuesday 1 June) and Alvaston Park (Thursday 3 June).  The workshops will include a performance, readings, and group activities to encourage the children to create their own poem. Spaces are limited and tickets must be booked in advance from the Derby Book Festival website.

On Saturday 29 May Lucy McRobert will be discussing her book 365 Days Wild at Darley Abbey Village Hall. She will inspire families to enjoy the great outdoors and discover Random Acts of Wildness that support wildlife and the environment. Spaces are limited due to social distancing, so book early on the Derby Book Festival website to avoid disappointment.

Author, illustrator, and previous winner of the Derby Children’s Picture Book Award, Jane Porter, will be hosting three collage workshops for children aged 3-8 at Déda. The workshops at 10.30am and 4.30pm will focus on her book ‘The Boy Who Loved Everyone’ while the 2pm workshop will be based on her newest book ‘Tiny Penguins and the New Baby.’
