The annual Great British Spring Clean, lead by Keep Britain Tidy kicks off on Friday and this year, we want more volunteers than ever to come and join us in our mission to get Derby looking cleaner and greener.
In 2019, almost a million bags of litter (over 4,000 tonnes) were collected by volunteers across the UK.
So, whether you just want to do some litter picking during a walk, host an event or join us at one of ours (listed at the bottom of this article), there are lots of ways to get involved!
If you’d like to join in with one of our events, send an email to neighbourhoods@derby.gov.uk to get more information.
When you make a pledge to (litter) pick, you’ll also be helping Keep Britain Tidy reach their #MillionMileMission. At the time of writing, almost 900,000 miles have been pledged.
The benefits of getting involved aren’t all environmental though. There is evidence to show that getting out in the fresh air and exercising are known to provide both mental and physical health benefits. Following the Great British September Clean 2020, volunteers were asked how taking part made them feel and 79% agreed that volunteering helped improve their mood.
Councillor Jerry Pearce, Cabinet Member for Streetpride commented:
“There are already so many fantastic volunteers across Derby who do amazing work to improve their local community. I really want the Great British Spring Clean to drive even more of us to do our bit, not just for Derby and the environment but to improve our own health and wellbeing.
However you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with us!”
