During the fostering process our foster carers and their families offer children and young people a warm and happy home. The children in our fostering families play a crucial role in helping whoever they foster feel included, safe and loved.

October 2022 is Sons and Daughters Month. For the whole of October, we are joining The Fostering Network to celebrate the incredible difference that children and young people make to the lives of those who are joining their families. It can be difficult to welcome a new member of the family, whether that’s with sharing toys, family or space. Regardless of new adjustments, these children change lives. All we can say is a huge thank you.

Councillor Evonne Williams, Cabinet member for children, young people and skills, said:

October has come around again and with it has come the fantastic Sons and Daughters celebration. It can be easy to forget the important role that children play in the process of a foster child coming into their lives.

It’s important that this month we remember to thank and show how much we appreciate the impact they have on the fostering world. It is not always an easy task to welcome someone new into your family, but these children do an absolutely incredible job.”

Emily, a child whose parents foster with Derby City Council, who has grown up with foster children joining her family said:

It (fostering) has helped us grow closer as a family and appreciate family more. It is amazing to open up our home to children who need us for that time.”

Ella, another child that grew up with foster children, said:

Fostering has influenced my career path and what I am studying at university. It is a very special experience as you welcome lots of different children into your home.”
