Derby’s Family Hubs will launch over the summer holidays and parents, carers, children and young people are invited along to discover what’s on offer.

The city has received £3.8 million in Government funding until March 2025 to deliver the Family Hubs Start for Life programme.

Six of the city’s existing children’s centres are being transformed into Family Hubs, providing families with access to a range of support services under one roof. The aim is to create a ‘one-stop shop’ to offer parents and carers the help they may need to establish a firm foundation for their children.

The hubs will be officially launched at weekly intervals throughout July and August, featuring lots of free fun sessions and activities, plus a range of support for families.

The launch dates are:

  • Mackworth and Morley: 24-28 July
  • Sinfin: 31 July-4 August
  • Rosehill: 7-11 August
  • Derwent: 14-18 August
  • Osmaston and Allenton: 21-25 August
  • Becket: 29 August-1 September

Each weekly launch will be packed with fun, free activities for babies, children and young people, including arts and crafts, sports, dance, face painting, animal handling and theatre sessions.

Parents and carers will be able to speak to a range of health professionals on a variety of subjects including infant feeding, first aid, special educational needs, pregnancy wellbeing, budgeting advice and healthy eating, to name but a few.

Councillor John Whitby, Derby City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care, Learning and Skills, said:

The Family Hub launch events will be an exciting opportunity for local communities to find out more about their local hub and what’s on offer for families.

I’d encourage people to go along, join in with the fun and get a taster of all the services and support that will be available to them going forward.

Family Hubs will provide support and advice to families with children and young people up to the age of 19, while young people with special education needs or disabilities (SEND) will be supported until the age of 25.

They will bring together services that families may previously have had to find in different places, or found difficult to navigate, making it simple to get help in the right place, at the right time.
