Cabinet members will be asked to approve the new Integrated Care Strategy for Derby and Derbyshire as next week’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 14 June.

The Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Strategy 2023 has been created with the aim of improving lifelong health care in Derby.

The new strategy will use the joint efforts of the Local Authority, NHS, Healthwatch and voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations to create a more integrated and united approach to improving health care for the people of Derby and Derbyshire. It will also look how to the further the transformative change needed to tackle system-level health and care challenges. The strategy was created by the Integrated Care Partnership (ICP) which is a combination of Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board (ICB). The ICP will help progress and promote the new strategy.

The strategy will focus on three main areas:

Start Well – To improve overall care and reduce inequalities in health, social, emotional, and physical development of children in the early years (aged 0-5)

Stay Well - To improve prevention and early intervention of the three main clinical causes of ill health and early death in the Joined Up Care Derbyshire (JUCD) population - circulatory disease, respiratory disease and cancer.

Age Well and Die Well - To enable older people to live healthy, independent lives at their normal place of residence for as long as possible.  This will prioritise health and wellbeing, help people in a crisis to remain at home where possible, and maximize a return to independence following escalations.

Councillor Alison Martin, Cabinet Member for Integrated Adult Care and Health, said:

This strategy is the first step in making changes towards joined-up health care in Derby and Derbyshire. The Council will be working in partnership with the NHS, the Integrated Care Board and the voluntary sector to focus on not just immediate health care but on lifelong health care for individuals.

A key aim is try to combat health inequalities, which are a significant problem in Derby. Although much of this is due to economic inequality, it is important that health services are delivered equally for everyone. In order to deliver the strategy effectively, more funding will be needed.””

With the start of the Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Strategy 2023, health care will be improved and focused more on an individual’s long term health and not just their immediate health. Overall, this will improve health care for all in Derby and Derbyshire from birth to death.
