The organisers of the Women’s Tour have announced the race will no longer take place this summer. Stage Four of the international women’s cycle race was due to finish in Derby on June 10.
It has today been announced that the 2023 Women’s Tour will no longer go ahead, with the race scheduled to return next year.
Race organisers say a 20% rise in running costs compared to the 2022 race, combined with a reduced level of commercial support, has made it impossible to deliver this year’s event.
Claire Davenport, Director of Leisure, Culture and Tourism for Derby City Council, said:
The postponement of the Women’s Tour is a shame, though understandable in the current climate. We will continue to explore future possibilities for hosting world-class cycling events in the city.
Derby takes pride in providing cycling opportunities for the East Midlands and we look forward to hosting the British BMX Championships later this year.
Derby has built a reputation as a top city for cycling, as home to one of only six velodromes in the UK. The Great Britain Cycling Team track squads spent most of last year at Derby Arena while the National Cycling Centre in Manchester underwent renovation work. This enabled the GB team to prepare for the great results that they achieved at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
In September, the Arena will welcome two great events, the National Madison Championships and National Derny Championships.
The city will also host the British BMX Championships at Alvaston Park on 26 and 27 August. It will be the fourth time that Derby BMX Club has hosted the showpiece of the domestic BMX calendar.
