The Council Tax Support Scheme (CTS) has recently been approved to continue in 2024. The scheme was created with the intention of helping those who may struggle to pay their council tax. The CTS was brought in to replace Council Tax Benefit in 2013.

Residents are charged council tax in order to help local councils pay for the services they provide. In Derby, council tax helps to pay for our streets to be kept tidy and bins collected by our Streetpride teams as well as to help fund other services such as maintenance of our parks and much more. Council tax bills vary depending on where a person lives, but we are aware that some residents may struggle to pay their full council tax bill.

The CTS helps to relieve some of the stress of paying your full council tax bill if you are struggling to pay it. Those who would like to apply for assistance with their council tax must fit in to certain criteria. A council tax discount will then be decided based on the following:

  • Household income
  • Existing claims (such as Universal credit, Child Benefit or Disability Living Allowance)
  • Savings
  • How many adults are in the property
  • How many children are in the property

Councillor Paul Hezelgrave, Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities and Customer Inclusion, said:

Council Tax is extremely important to keeping Derby as clean, vibrant and safe as possible for all of us. However, we know that there are those that may be struggling to pay their full council tax bill during this time. The Council Tax Support Scheme has been approved in order to support those who need help making payments during this time.

If you need help and think you may be eligible, please get in touch to find out more about the scheme and what we can do for you.”
