The Ready, Set Read! Winter Mini Challenge is back for 2023 with more free fun activities to keep children busy over the colder months.
The Winter Mini Challenge will run from 1 December 2023 to 19 February 2024. It’s a great way to encourage youngsters to foster a love of reading, and Derby’s warm and welcoming libraries have a huge range of books to choose from.
Children can unlock rewards for reading and find fun activities which are sure to engage even the most reluctant readers on the dedicated, free-to-access website.
The Winter Mini Challenge is an online, bitesize version of The Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, they teamed up with the Youth Sport Trust and public libraries for the Ready, Set, Read! Summer Reading Challenge that empowered hundreds of thousands of young people to read and play, keeping minds and bodies active over the summer break. It was such a success that the Reading Agency has extended the theme into this year’s Winter Mini Challenge.
To take part in the Winter Mini Challenge, children simply read three or more books – these can be any book they choose, so visit your local library and delve into the shelves! Every time they finish a book, they add it to their Challenge website profile and leave a short book review.
Reaching their online reading goal will unlock a limited-edition virtual badge and a special Winter Mini Challenge certificate to print off and keep. There will be a host of other fun activities, book recommendations and games from the best children's authors and illustrators featured on the website.
There is also a Home Zone on the Reading Challenge website full of useful information for parents, grandparents and carers, plus a special Pre-School Zone. The Library Zone has information about libraries near you running the challenge, and how to take part. There is also a Reading Challenge Facebook page so that parents can keep up to date with news and opportunities.
