Councillor Baggy Shanker, Leader of Derby City Council, has passed on his congratulations to Derby County Football Club on behalf of the city, as they secured promotion to the Championship.

Needing just a point against Carlisle in the final game of the season, the Rams’ secured their return to the second tier of English football with a 2-0 win.

I’d like to say a massive Congratulations to Derby County Football Club on their promotion back to the Championship. After a difficult few years for the Rams, it’s great to see the club back on the up and giving fans across the city something to celebrate.

Football has the power to unite people in a way few things can, which is all the more remarkable in a city as diverse as ours. There will be thousands of people in Derby and beyond celebrating this achievement together over the weekend.

The benefits of promotion stretch beyond the club and its fans, and the whole city will now feel the impacts. Playing in a higher league brings more national exposure for our city, with our local economy benefiting from more travelling fans and broadcasters spending time and money in our shops, restaurants and hotels. Generations of Derby residents will be inspired to get involved with the sport and become more active thanks to this success.

Congratulations once again to everyone at the club, who have done the city proud and can enjoy a well-deserved rest.
