A statement from the Leader of Derby City Council, Cllr Nadine Peatfield, and Council Cabinet following a peaceful counter protest on Wednesday 7 August:
Last night, the rumoured protests in Derby didn’t happen. Instead, a large group of counter protesters stood together peacefully in Normanton, and showed the country what we already knew – that the criminals who spread fear and disorder across the country do not represent Derby, or the values of those of us who are proud to call this city home.
My heartfelt thanks go to the Police, our partners and community leaders, and staff across the Council for their action and intelligence in reassuring businesses and residents during this threat of unrest. It’s another shining example of #TeamDerby at its best.
Together with the Police and our city partners we will be continuing to monitor the situation closely, and will take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of residents.
