Derby City Council has launched two twelve-week consultations on proposals to introduce bus lanes on two major routes, alongside other improvements.

The proposed changes would see bus lanes created along the A6/Duffield Road between the A38 and Broadway Roundabout, and outbound on Osmaston Road between Nightingale Road and Spider Island.

Citizens are now invited to review the proposals and have their say on the Let’s Talk Derby website before both consultations close on Sunday 27 October 2024.

The Council is working to create a better-connected Derby and is taking steps to improve public transport and deliver better bus services, as outlined in the National Bus Strategy.

The changes proposed in these consultations will make bus travel a more attractive option for citizens and visitors by allowing for faster, more reliable journeys without impacting other road users.

While busses are the focus of these proposals, they will also bring improvements for those choosing active travel, such as walking and cycling, as well as enhancing the overall appearance of both areas. This includes the creation of a shared use cycle lane on Duffield Road and improvements to junctions on both routes.

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability, said:

Creating a better connected, greener city is a priority for this administration.  We want to encourage more people to take up sustainable transport options, which would lead to fewer vehicles on the road and reduce emissions in the city.

Improving the passenger experience and reliability of bus travel will make it a more attractive option, but this is only possible if the infrastructure is available, and that is why we are consulting on these proposals.

We want to make a Derby we can all be proud of and the views of our citizens and communities are vital. I encourage everyone, particularly those who regularly use these routes, to take part in the consultations and have their say.”

These proposed improvements are possible thanks to funding from the National Bus Strategy: Bus Service Improvement Plan. This funding covers measures such as bus priority infrastructure, fares support, ticketing reform, bus service support and improved information.
