A manifesto pledge to increase the frequency of street cleansing in inner city areas including Normanton Road has been put into action. It is hoped that the additional resource, alongside extra education, engagement and enforcement will drive down anti-social behaviour (ASB) such as littering, fly-tipping and graffiti.
Littering and fly-tipping can create a health hazard for communities by encouraging vermin such as rats and reduces overall quality of life for communities affected by these types of ASB. Additionally, fly-tipping can create a cycle of neglect and further ASB. When an area appears neglected, it can attract other forms of ASB, such as vandalism, graffiti, and more littering. As a result, communities feel disempowered, demoralised and are less likely to take part in community activities.
Littering, fly-tipping and other ASB also negatively impacts businesses by reducing footfall in the area, as residents are less likely to visit these areas. Alongside the additional street cleansing activities, Council Teams will be working with local businesses and communities to increase reporting of ASB.
The increased street cleansing also supports ongoing engagement and enforcement work with Kingdom Local Authority Support.
Ndukwe Onuoha Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure commented:
“Over the last few weeks, Street Cleansing team have helped to achieve another manifesto pledge and increased the frequency of street cleaning in inner city areas including the Normanton Road, Abbey and Arboretum areas. By doing this, it will decrease fly tipping and other anti-social behaviour and increase communities’ pride in their area.
“Anti-social behaviour such as littering and fly-tipping also negatively impacts local businesses that are vital in their communities. So, we’re actively working with businesses to encourage them to report problems which allows us to tackle them head on.
“Another way we’re tackling fly-tipping is through free bulky waste collections. On Monday 2 September, residents can apply for the next round of free bulky waste collections. The scheme was incredibly popular in the spring with all slots booked in a matter of hours. I want to thank residents who do the right thing for Derby and our planet by trying to reduce their waste, recycle and dispose of items the right way.”
Residents and businesses can report fly-tipping and littering by using a simple on-line form.
