We are urging pensioners across the UK to act now and apply for Pension Credit, a vital benefit that could provide an average of £3,900 per year. Time is running out to submit your application to ensure eligibility for backdated payments and the Winter Fuel Payment. Pensioners must apply for Pension Credit by 21 December to qualify for a 2024-25 Winter Fuel Payment.

With as many as 880,000 pensioners still missing out on this essential support, it is more important than ever to check your eligibility or help a loved one, neighbour, or friend to do so. Pension Credit is not only a financial lifeline but also a gateway to additional benefits, including qualification for the Winter Fuel Payment. This payment provides crucial support during the colder months and is available to households that include someone born on or before 22 September 1958.

Checking your eligibility is straightforward and can be done online, by phone, or through the Pension Credit calculator on the Government website. To apply, you’ll need to provide basic information about your income, savings, and household.

Those receiving Pension Credit may also qualify for:

  • Help with housing costs.
  • Council Tax reductions.
  • Free NHS dental treatment and other healthcare support.

Councillor Sarah Chambers, Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities & Communities, said:

I want to strongly encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible for Pension Credit to apply as soon as possible. This benefit is more than just extra money, it can provide a vital lifeline for covering everyday costs and accessing additional support, like the Winter Fuel Payment, especially during the colder months.

If you have a neighbour, friend, or family member who might qualify, please take a moment to help them check their eligibility. The process is straightforward, and the deadline of Saturday 21 December 2024 is fast approaching. Together, we can ensure no one misses out on the support they are entitled to."

Over the next few weeks, the Council will be reaching out directly to eligible pension-age residents in Derby, urging them to apply for Pension Credit as soon as possible. Residents can find out more by contacting the DWP, the Council's Welfare Team, or by visiting one of the Warm Welcome Hubs to learn more about Pension Credit and how to apply, visit the Pension Credit website.
