The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging hundreds of thousands of pensioners to apply for Pension Credit, a benefit that could provide an average of £3,900 per year.
With as many as 880,000 pensioners missing out on Pension Credit, the Pension Credit Week of Action seeks to raise awareness and encourage more claims. This year, those who qualify for Pension Credit will also be automatically eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, providing further support during the colder months.
If you have a retired loved one, neighbour or friend we are encouraging you to help them check their eligibility and apply for Pension Credit. Over the coming weeks, we will be issuing advice and support on how to apply for pension credit to those who need it. You can also find out more about pension credit by keeping an eye on our social media pages. The deadline to submit a backdated claim and receive the Winter Fuel Payment is 21 December. Checking your eligibility is quick, easy and can be checked online.
The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free payment for households that include someone born on or before 22 September 1958 (for 2024-25). To be eligible for these payments you must also be claiming one of the following:
- Universal Credit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities & Communities, said:
In Derby we have over 9 million pounds of unclaimed Pension Credit that pensioners are entitled to and we are working on several initiatives to reach out, signpost and support these residents as a priority.
It is crucial that all residents who want to access the Winter Fuel Payments are aware of the recent changes, and we will be issuing information regularly on our social media platforms. Information will also be available at your GP practice, Derby City Council House reception and our Warm Welcome Hubs.
I encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with the changes so you’re aware of if and how they may affect you”.
