Derby’s new Reuse shop has officially opened its doors as a permanent addition to the Raynesway Household Waste and Recycling Centre. The launch event, held on Saturday 16 August attracted strong community support with residents, councillors and local media in attendance.
The shop was vibrant and well-stocked with pre-loved items ready for new homes and customers were quick to explore the wide range of affordable goods on offer, from toys and books to furniture, kitchenware and home décor.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Strategy, Regeneration and Policy, said:
The opening was a fantastic moment for Derby. Seeing residents shopping and donating shows just how much appetite there is for reuse in our city. This shop is already delivering on our promises – helping residents through the cost-of-living crisis, reducing waste, and creating something that benefits everyone. We’re delighted to see it become such a success so quickly.
Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure, added:
The shop looked amazing on opening day, packed with quality items that might otherwise have been thrown away. It’s proof of how simple changes – like donating instead of discarding – can make a real difference. I was thrilled to see residents leaving with bargains while knowing they were also helping Derby reduce its environmental impact.
Craig Capper, Contract Manager at HW Martin Waste Ltd, said:
We’re very pleased to see the Reuse Shop open as a permanent fixture. Every item that finds a new home here means one less item going to waste, which is great for the environment and the community. On this opening day alone, we sold more than 250 kg of items that won't be going to waste. It’s rewarding to see how much value can be created simply by giving everyday items a second life.

The Reuse Shop is open every Monday, Friday and Saturday, offering Derby residents the chance to purchase good-quality second-hand items at affordable prices. All profits are reinvested into the reuse initiative at Raynesway HWRC, with a share donated to support residents most in need through the Council’s Welfare Reform team.
The shop relies on donations of good-quality items that residents no longer need, helping to prevent waste and support the community. For guidance on what can be donated and how to donate, visit the Reuse Raynesway shop website.
