Statement from Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council:
We are pleased to confirm that we have submitted our 'One Derbyshire, Two Councils' joint proposals by the government’s deadline for Local Government Reorganisation.
This submission represents a collective and evidence-based effort to create a more efficient and effective local government structure for the future of our county. We are advocating for the replacement of the existing ten authorities with two new unitary councils—one covering the north, and one the south. As a city, we’ve worked closely with our District and Borough partners, and although there has been disagreement on where a line between the authorities should sit, we are in agreement that a two council unitary option is the right approach to take.
We are genuinely excited about Option B1, which we believe is the very best path forward for both unitaries. This proposal unlocks significant potential, not only ensuring the long-term, stable funding for our vital local services, but also proactively securing the crucial space and opportunity the city requires to flourish, grow our economy, and meet the changing needs of every one of our valued residents and businesses.
The key strength of Option B1 is its balance. It delivers a near perfect balanced population and an equalised Council Tax base, which is crucial for the financial health of both new councils. This approach maintains high-quality services, allows for vital local investment, and forecasts significant savings of up to £167m by year six. I would like to thank our colleagues in Chesterfield, High Peak and Erewash for also supporting this option.
Crucially, this plan is designed to protect Derbyshire's historic boundaries, cultural heritage, and environmental assets, while ensuring our new unitary councils are financially responsible and locally responsive. This is about establishing better governance that works for all our residents.
