A Sensory Garden in Spondon will be a riot of colour come spring after volunteers planted new bulbs that were won by residents in the ward in a Green Rewards competition.

Launched in March, Green Rewards is a free web and mobile app-based programme available to all residents in Derby City and Derbyshire Dales postcodes. It incentivises sustainable behaviours by awarding points to residents who log their actions such as recycling, reducing electricity consumption and using sustainable transport modes. Members can win monthly prizes for earning the most points and there are regular ward competitions like biodiversity project funding.

After earning the most points on average within Derby City between March and July, Spondon were top of the leaderboard and were awarded funding for a spring bulb display.

Trees for Spondon, a local volunteer group and pupils from West Park School were supported by the Parks Team to plant the bulbs on Thursday (6 November). Species planted include:

  • Crocus - Pickwick
  • Daffodils - Jetfire
  • Fritillaria - Melegris

In the most recent ward competition that ran from September to October within Derby City, Arboretum were top of the leaderboard and will have a new pocket park installed in the ward.

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability commented:

Green Rewards is such a fantastic tool that all residents can use for free. It’s shown that communities can come together to put their local area at the top of the leaderboard by doing simple actions like reporting their step count, sharing how they’ve connected with nature and steps they’ve taken to make their home more efficient.

Make sure you’re signed up for your chance to win!

Green Rewards also features a unique, interactive Green Home Guide for residents to learn how to reduce the environmental impact of their homes; a carbon footprint calculator; and enhanced user customisation, allowing members a more in-depth focus on specific sustainable topics including biodiversity, food waste, and home energy.

Josh Cleall, CEO of Team Jump, who created the Derbyshire Green Rewards programme, added:

While the draw of our programmes is the chance to win a voucher for your climate action, many are just as motivated by the chance to donate to a cause they care about. In this case, Spondon’s climate action has been rewarded with a tangible addition to their community – a testament to their own contribution to nature.

Residents can sign up for the programme on the Derbyshire Green Rewards website.
