Derby City Council has introduced a new fully electric street sweeper to support its Street Cleansing Team in keeping the city centre tidy and accessible throughout the day. The Green Machine 400ze was delivered last week following a successful procurement process and has already been deployed across busy city centre areas.

The walk-behind sweeper offers the same cleaning power as traditional diesel models but with zero emissions and minimal noise. This means it can operate even in the early morning without disturbing residents or businesses - a key advantage for noise-sensitive urban areas. Fully electric and self-propelled, the sweeper improves both the speed and quality of cleaning compared with manual sweeping

Compact and agile, it’s able to access narrow or newly paved areas around locations such as Springwell Square and the Market Hall that larger sweepers can’t reach. The machine’s suction hose removes leaves and debris efficiently, while its built-in dust suppression system sprays a fine mist of water to capture particles during cleaning.

Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure, said:

Investing in modern, greener equipment like this electric sweeper is another step forward in keeping our streets clean while supporting our wider environmental goals. It's quiet, zero-emission operation makes it ideal for our city centre, ensuring Derby remains a pleasant, welcoming place for everyone.
