A successful Pension Credit campaign, run by Derby City Council, has delivered crucial support to pensioners across the city, ensuring they remain warm and financially secure during the winter months.
The campaign has secured more than £583,000 in support for 140 Derby pensioners between November 2024 and July 2025, helping to ease the pressure of the rising cost of living. The initiative, led by Derby City Council in partnership with local organisations, has made a huge difference in the lives of many pensioners. As a result, pensioners have gained:
- £455,028 in Pension Credit (Guaranteed Credit / Savings Credit or both), with an average annual value of £3,250 per household.
- £100,106 in backdated Pension Credit.
- £28,000 in Winter Fuel Payments.
- A projected £3.8 million lifetime impact in Pension Credit and associated benefits, based on local life expectancy.
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Cabinet Member for Public Safety, Equalities and Communities, said:
It’s brilliant news that the Pension Credit campaign is making a real difference to the lives of pensioners across the city, and I’m pleased that we have managed to support 140 people.
By working with partners and raising awareness of the scheme, we’re helping to ensure that pensioners have the crucial support they need, especially as the rising cost of living can leave them struggling to afford everyday essentials.
If you think you or a family member may be missing out on Pension Credit, please visit the Government website to find out more.
Despite the campaign’s success, The Council's low-income data shows that there are 446 eligible households not yet claiming Pension Credit. Derby City Council encourages all residents to check if they, or someone they know, could benefit.

Residents eligible for Pension Credit are also entitled to Winter Fuel Payments, which can be automatically applied for or opted out of if not needed. Guidance is available on the Government website.
