Derby Market Hall is set to host the upcoming Derby Bike Festival, a day-long celebration showcasing the diverse cycling opportunities available across the region.

The event on Saturday 18 April will highlight the physical and mental benefits of cycling while promoting inclusivity for riders of all ages and abilities. It will feature a wide variety of activities and organisations, and include a programme of talks from inspiring cyclists.

The festival is sponsored by Ayup Bikes, who are moving into a permanent location in Lock Up Yard after running a successful pop-up unit at the Market Hall, allowing their community to ride right up to their premises. Since launching in late 2024, Ayup Bikes has focused on making cycling accessible through low-cost repairs, maintenance classes, and the sale of refurbished bicycles.

This move allows them to continue their mission of helping residents maintain their bikes in an affordable, eco-friendly way.

The event will bring together several key organisations:

  • Cycle Derby will showcase community initiatives, including balance bikes for children and adapted cycles designed for those who face challenges with traditional bicycles
  • The team from Derby Arena’s velodrome will highlight their world-class track facilities, while local BMX riders will be available to discuss how to get involved with the city's tracks
  • Attendees can meet local bike shops and view a selection of historic and modern models from the world-renowned Mercian Cycles
  • Local community police will be on-site providing bike security marking throughout the day
  • Cycling charities and campaign groups will be available to discuss ongoing work in developing safer infrastructure and promoting sustainable transport.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy and Policy, said:

Derby Bike Festival is a brilliant addition to the Market Hall’s vibrant event schedule. As a city nationally renowned for cycling and a Council dedicated to active travel, there is no better home for this festival. We invite everyone in Derby to hop on their bikes and rediscover our city on two wheels!

A highlight of the festival will be the stage programme, which features talks from local speakers who have used bikes to achieve inspiring feats and representatives from local charities and bike clubs.

Ken Timmis, from Ayup Bikes, said:

We are privileged to organise Derby’s first Bike Festival - it is a celebration of cycling in the city. Whether you are a seasoned cyclist or looking to start your cycling journey, come along and chat with cycling enthusiasts to discover how riding a bike can change lives and make new memories.

Derby Bike Festival takes place at Derby Market Hall on Saturday 18 April from 10am until 4pm. For more information see the Derby Market Hall website.
