Derby Market Hall is opening its doors to the next generation of business owners for the city’s very first Young Traders Market on Saturday 30 May.
The event, part of a nationwide campaign by the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF), is all about giving young people the chance to step into a real-world market environment.
It's designed for young entrepreneurs aged 16 to 30, providing them with a platform to showcase their products, connect with customers face-to-face, and develop valuable business skills in a supportive market environment. It’s more than just a market day – it’s a competition aimed at finding the best new talent in the industry.
Local judges will be on the lookout for standout stalls, with winning traders moving on to the East Midlands regional final at Harborough Market. From there, the best of the best will head to the national final in Stratford-upon-Avon. Held over a busy bank holiday weekend, the final event attracts around 40,000 visitors, providing a massive stage for young businesses to shine.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy and Policy, said:
We’re thrilled to bring the Young Traders Market to Derby for the first time. The heart of the Young Traders Market campaign is about building confidence and making sure the future of our local markets is bright and full of energy.
We’re passionate about supporting independent, local traders at Derby Market Hall and we can’t wait to see the energy and innovation our young traders bring.
While the competition and judging are specifically for the 16-30 age group, the market is also welcoming traders under 16 to join in, gain experience, and get a feel for the atmosphere.
If you’re a young maker, creator, or entrepreneur ready to put your business on the map, we want to hear from you. Stalls cost £15. You can apply today via Eventaly by sharing a few details about yourself and what you sell.
