Derby City Council will be carrying out surveys on London Road to pave the way for a transformative future scheme.
A part of the Council’s commitment to building a greener Derby, this initiative aims to enhance journeys and promote active travel, which in turn can reduce congestion and pollution.
Funded by the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), the scheduled surveys will take place along London Road, stretching from City Gate to Brighton Road (West), encompassing the Ascot Drive junction.
These surveys are crucial in developing a comprehensive business case for the proposed improvements, which underscore the Council's commitment to fostering an integrated and efficient transport network.
Although specific proposals are still under development, the envisioned scheme is expected to deliver substantial benefits, including:
- Integrating planned maintenance activities to minimise future disruption and bolster highway resilience.
- Revitalising the street scene with new planters and public realm enhancements.
- Establishing new cycle lanes and pedestrian facilities, connecting the route to the broader active travel network.
- Enhancing the passenger experience for bus users with improved bus stops and priority at traffic lights.
The survey works are being planned to minimise disruption. Where traffic management is required, works will be planned off-peak or nights.
Derby City Council is committed to creating a more sustainable and accessible transport infrastructure, and these initial steps mark a significant stride towards realising that vision. Stay tuned for further developments as planning progresses.
Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability, said:
It’s great to be looking to the future and supporting schemes that help more encourage active travel and reduce emissions on our roads, helping us become a greener city.
Whilst we are only at the start of the process, this work will help us develop proposals for consideration as part of another major improvement scheme, committed to giving people real alternatives to travelling by car.
