Police and council colleagues are working together to provide reassurance to the public following the events in Friar Gate last weekend.

The incident, in which seven people were left with serious injuries after a car collided with them, has caused understandable concern in the community.

Ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend officers from the Derbyshire Constabulary and colleagues from Derby City Council have been working together to provide reassurance patrols across the city.

Inspector Rachel Fowkes, who leads on policing in the city centre said:

We are working in close partnership with the city council to ensure that dedicated patrols are carried out in the city centre, to offer reassurance to members of the public as they visit the city.

As is usual over a Bank Holiday period extra high visibility patrols which consist of police officers and council public protection officers, will be out and about in the city centre.

Anyone with concerns or information about the incident in Friar Gate on Saturday evening is urged to speak with them.

The increased police patrols are being complimented by patrols Public Protection Officers who are helping support officers in the city and providing a high visibility presence across Derby.

And there are also traffic calming measures planned for Friar Gate over the Bank Holiday.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council, said:

We remain committed to ensuring our residents and visitors feel safe in our city. Derby has proudly flown the Purple Flag since 2013, and the relationships built through this accreditation were crucial in delivering an effective, coordinated response to this distressing incident.

In direct response, traffic calming measures will be introduced on Friar Gate over the Bank Holiday Weekend, and we have worked with our partners to ensure an increased presence of Public Protection and police officers.

If anyone does have any concerns while they are out, please do look out for these officers and speak to them. They are there to help you.
