Friar Gate Studios is inviting young people with an EHCP, aged 14 and upwards, to an event on Tuesday 7 July.
The session will take place at Friar Gate Studios from 4.30-7.30pm, and will look at the kinds of support available to young people with SEND once they leave school. Parents and carers are also encouraged to drop in and find out what’s on offer to help plan for their young person’s future.
Whether they’ve already got ideas about life after school, or are just starting to explore their options, young people and families are encouraged to take a look at information stands and chat with people who can help. Topics covered will include:
- College and training opportunities
- Supported internships
- Travel training and independence skills
- Money and benefits advice
- Housing and support services
There will also be short talks throughout the evening around supported internships, travel training, social groups and other useful topics. Importantly, there will also be free drinks and cakes, made and served by current learners from the Glow & Grow café!
Councillor Paul Hezelgrave, Derby City Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Skills said of the event:
The future can seem scary when you’re unsure of what you want to do and what possibilities are out there. We want to make sure our young people with SEND can follow their dreams and build happy futures with as much independence as possible.
This event covers practical things like housing and training opportunities, but also looks at the importance of community through social groups such as BeConnected. The future starts here!
Beyond 16: Pathways and support for SEND students takes place on Tuesday 7 July at Friar Gate Studios from 4.30-7.30pm. It is free to attend, and guests can dip in and out at any point, though there are talks throughout the evening so you may want to get there early to sign up!
