Residents and businesses have until 8 September to give their thoughts on the new Local Plan for Derby.
The Local plan is a key planning policy document that sets out how land in the city will be used for homes, jobs and services until 2043.
This is the second opportunity people will have to speak into the process, following a consultation in January that drew over 500 responses. That feedback has been reviewed and the proposals updated where possible.
The Local Plan must meet a stringent set of legal obligations and process, which is what we are inviting residents to comment on in this latest consultation.
The new plan, covering the period to 2043, makes provision for at least 12,500 new homes. Growth is planned for the city centre, as well as suburban areas including Littleover, Chaddesden, Spondon and Mickleover, supported by existing arrangements with neighbouring authorities.
Alongside housing, around 130 hectares have been earmarked as “employment land” to provide space for businesses and workplaces, including at nationally significant locations such as Infinity Park Derby. A retail-led regeneration strategy is proposed to strengthen the city centre as a thriving, attractive destination for residents, workers and visitors.

I’d like to thank the cross-party working group – Cllrs Dhindsa, Bonser, Care, M Holmes, and Prosser – that have spent considerable time on this document, and the officers who have pulled it together.
Thank you also to everyone who had their say in the earlier consultation. Your views were heard and helped shape this latest version. Now we want to hear from you again on whether you think these proposals are realistic and deliverable for our city.
This is a key document that has an impact on all of us in Derby. We all want it to be a place that meets the needs of its residents and businesses, and this plan help deliver that outcome.
The consultation on the new Local Plan for Derby is open from 27 July to 8 September, and can be completed online on the Urban Intelligence platform.
