The Government has today announced its decision on Local Government Reorganisation in Derbyshire.
Option B1 has been selected, confirming two new unitary authorities for Derbyshire - one in the north and one in the south, which will include Derby city.
These new councils will comprise of the current areas of:
- Bolsover District Council, Chesterfield Borough Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council, High Peak Borough Council and North-East Derbyshire District Council plus 21 parishes from Amber Valley Borough Council
- Derby City Council, Erewash Borough Council and South Derbyshire District Council plus 14 parishes from Amber Valley Borough Council.
Delivering high-quality services remains the absolute priority for all Derbyshire councils, who will continue to work positively and constructively together to ensure this transition is carefully planned, well managed, and focused on delivering the best possible outcomes for our residents and communities.
Members of the public will see no immediate changes to their day-to-day council services, and residents should continue to access them as usual.
Today's announcement marks the beginning of the next stage of the Local Government Reorganisation programme, offering an opportunity to shape a local government model that is sustainable, resilient, and built to serve our communities for years to come.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Strategy and Policy said:
We are pleased that the Government has listened to our views and selected the option we believe is best, not only for our residents here in Derby, but for the wider region as a whole.
This decision brings much-needed clarity, allowing our teams to press ahead with the work required to prepare for the creation of the new authorities, working in close partnership with our colleagues across Derbyshire. This will deliver the greatest equity of the two authorities, size of population and travel to work patterns.
I want to thank everyone who took the time to participate in the public consultations and share their views. While I know this announcement will raise many questions, we are committed to being as transparent as possible and will provide regular, honest updates as this process unfolds.
