Children in Derby who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals are being encouraged to secure their free summer holiday club places as the popular Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme launches its summer bookings.
Running throughout the school summer break, the scheme is open children from reception age to year 11 who receive benefits-related free school meals delivered in partnership by Derby City Council and Community Action Derby with funding from UK Government.
There's no shortage of things to get involved in from animal handling and climbing to music, performing arts, archery and skateboarding. Children can also try their hand at football, cricket, martial arts and dodgeball.
Every child who takes part will enjoy a nutritious meal each day, alongside sessions designed to teach them about healthy eating from hands-on cookery to family food experiences, supporting both children and their families in making positive lifestyle choices.
Families who are eligible for the scheme will automatically be contacted by 'Holiday Activities' via email or text with a new voucher code and a link to book their place. Please note that any previously issued codes will no longer be valid, so look out for the updated one.
Councillor Paul Hezelgrave, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Skills, said:
The summer holidays should be a time for children to have fun, try new things and make lasting memories and that's exactly what the HAF programme delivers. With some brilliant new providers joining us for the first time this year, I'd encourage every eligible family to book their place as soon as possible and make the most of what promises to be a fantastic summer.
This summer sees 66 clubs operating right across the city, with provision available in every ward. Six providers specialise in supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and many other clubs are also equipped to accommodate children with additional needs.
New to the programme this year, My Messy Play (for children aged 5–11) will be based at Mickleover Community Pavilion, offering a packed programme of messy play, arts and crafts, sensory experiences, team games and challenges. Children will also enjoy outdoor play and movement activities, with plenty of opportunities to explore, create and make new friends.
Also joining the programme for the first time, High Hopes Project (for children aged 8–16) will be based at Alter Rock, giving young people the chance to push their limits with indoor climbing, bouldering, abseiling, air walk (high level trim trail) and caving. An exhilarating mix of adventure and challenge for older children and teens.
Summer bookings are now open. For full details about Derby's Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, including information on your booking code, please visit the HAF website. If your child is unable to attend a session, please let the provider know as early as possible so the space can be given to another family.
