This No Smoking Day, Nick Chetwyn is proudly celebrating three months of being smoke-free - a significant achievement facilitated by the dedicated support of Derby City Council’s Livewell service.

This journey has not only improved Nick’s mental and physical health but also empowered him to reclaim his life after overcoming challenging circumstances.

While living in shared accommodation in Derby, Nick, aged 57, faced a traumatic incident involving a dog attack, necessitating facial reconstruction surgery. During his recovery at the Royal Derby Hospital, he was introduced to nicotine replacement therapy products and later referred to Livewell for ongoing smoking cessation support.

Having smoked up to 40 roll-ups daily for 44 years while managing asthma and under investigation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema, Nick had attempted to quit three times before. However, it was the comprehensive support from Livewell that made the difference this time.

Reflecting on his journey, Nick said:

The attack left me anxious and isolated, but I was determined to quit smoking for my health and financial well-being.

Livewell was a crucial first step and meeting my advisor, Gubby, at the Council House made me feel genuinely supported and listened to.

Despite facing personal pressures, including his daughter's battle with addiction and his subsequent role in caring for his grandchildren, Nick persisted.

A minor setback led him back to smoking, but Gubby's unwavering encouragement motivated Nick to make another attempt in October. With a new plan in place, which included nicotine gum to curb cravings, he found an encouraging environment where he could explore deeper reasons for smoking and build self-esteem.

Weekly progress checks and Gubby's consistent encouragement drove Nick forward. Additionally, a recent diagnosis of autism and ADHD offered insights into his lifelong challenges, further contributing to his sense of self-awareness and growth.

Nick is delighted to breathe easier, to be able to smell and taste food and have more money in his pocket.

I feel 100% better in myself and I’ve regained the confidence to move into my own flat. I have a sense of purpose again.

Livewell advisor, Gubby Manku, said:

Evidence shows that with the right support people are three times more likely to quit successfully than trying alone.  Nicholas has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination.

By quitting smoking and regaining personal independence, he has transitioned from feeling isolated to being a supportive pillar for his family. His journey showcases immense courage and perseverance.
