Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council, announced some changes to Cabinet at the Council’s Annual General Meeting today, Wednesday 20 May.

The Leader’s own portfolio has changed to Regeneration, Strategy and Policy, with responsibility for City Centre transferring to Councillor Gurkiran Kaur, the incoming Cabinet Member for City Centre, Culture and Tourism.

Councillor Shiraz Khan has taken on the role of Deputy Leader, while retaining the portfolio for Housing, Strategic Planning and Regulatory Services. Also retaining their portfolios are Councillor Carmel Swan (Climate Change, Transport and Sustainability), Councillor Alison Martin (Health and Adult Care), and outgoing Deputy Leader Councillor Paul Hezelgrave (Children, Young People and Skills).

The remaining Cabinet members have had minor adjustments to their portfolios. Councillor Sarah Chambers is now Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities and Communities, while Digital, Finance and Governance will now be overseen by Councillor Hardyal Dhindsa. Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha remains Cabinet Member for Streetpride with the addition of Public Safety and Leisure.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council, said:

Over the last year, we as an administration and as a cabinet have continued to demonstrate what can be achieved when there is clear leadership, a strong administration, and a determination to deliver for the people of derby.

Derby is moving forward and this administration remains committed to building a city that is ambitious, compassionate and full of opportunity.

Of course, we could not deliver all these things for our city and its people this without the support of my cabinet members. I’d like to send a big thank you for their support over the last year. Thank you cabinet, and I look forward to working with you over the coming year.

Councillor Shiraz Khan, Deputy Leader of Derby City Council, said:

I’m extremely honoured and proud to take on the role of Deputy Leader and welcome this extra responsibility while continuing to work hard on my portfolio.

As one of the longest serving councillors in this administration, my aim has always been to provide a high-quality, consistent level of service that the people of Derby deserve. This is something I am committed to continuing, as well as providing strong and reliable leadership both to support the Leader as she continues her excellent work, and in her absence.

Councillor Gurkiran Kaur, Cabinet Member for City Centre, Culture and Tourism, said:

There are many great things lined up for our city centre, and I’m looking forward to playing my part in that exciting transformation. My focus will be on getting the best out of our city centre and cultural offering, creating a vibrant and welcoming Derby for residents and visitors alike.

Councillor Hardyal Dhindsa, Cabinet Member for Digital, Finance and Governance, said:

I’m pleased to take on responsibility for Governance and Finance, alongside my existing digital portfolio, at such an important time for Derby. Some great work has already been done to put us onto a stable financial footing. In the modern world, financial resilience and digital innovation are fundamentally linked. By combining these areas, we can use cutting-edge technology to streamline our processes, protect public funds, and build a highly efficient, future-proof council that delivers maximum value for our residents.

In the meeting, the contributions of Councillors Paul Hezelgrave and Kathy Kozlowski were also acknowledged, as they stepped down from the roles of Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Governance and Finance respectively.
