Rights of way - maintenance and enforcement
We have a responsibility to keep rights of way easy to use. We work with landowners to make sure that this happens. The rights of way are shown on our map.
This includes making sure that they are free from restrictions such as:
- obstructions
- danger
- blocking
- interference.
We are also responsible for checking works carried out by landowners, such as the repair of stiles, and that public rights of way are clearly marked.
How do you deal with problems on rights of way?
If we are aware of a problem on a right of way we first try to help the responsible party comply with the law. However, we occasionally have to take more firm action against those who will not act within the law.
You can find further information and advice on our Rights of Way - information and advice page.
Do you inspect rights of way?
We aim to inspect rights of way once a year and will arrange repair of any dangerous problems.
What about problems on the public highway?
We also manage enforcement to deal with problems on the public highway.
How can I report a problem?
The quickest and easiest way to contact us is online.
