Night time economy - Purple Flag
Derby was awarded a Purple Flag for its city centre evening and night time economy offer in July 2013.
Purple Flag is an accreditation scheme that recognises excellent management of city centres at night, similar to the Blue Flag for beaches or Green Flag for parks. It is backed by the government, police and business.
To achieve Purple Flag status, towns and cities must:
- be welcoming to everyone
- offer safe ways for visitors to travel home
- provide a good mix of venues
- be appealing after dark.
Purple Flag towns and cities benefit from more visitors, lower crime and anti-social behaviour and improved perceptions of centres.
Purple Flag is run by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) in partnership with industry, licensees, retailers, central and local government, the police and consumers. It is based on extensive research, market testing, pilot and pathfinder projects.
Derby was highlighted by ATCM as being a great night time destination for all ages and for having an excellent mix of exciting and diverse evening entertainment on offer. Particular praise was given to Derby’s real ale, micro-breweries, and the city’s beer king. The strong partnership working towards Purple Flag was also highly commended.
