Education

School admissions

The School Admissions team support families to apply for school places for students in Reception and Year 7, as well as in-year school transfers. The team can also make sure that students who need extra support or a quick placement get a suitable school place.

If your child is not offered a place at your preferred school, you have the right to appeal. Appeals are heard by an independent panel, and their decision is final. Further information can be found on the School admissions webpages.

Children’s Education Advisory Service

The Children’s Education Advisory Service (CEAS) provides advice, support and guidance regarding the educational well-being of the children and young people belonging to families in all three services and eligible MOD civilians who are based overseas. All advice given is professional, child-centred and focuses on the best interests of the individual.

The CEAS team is comprised of qualified teachers and experienced case advisors who can answer mainly by email and telephone. Visit the CEAS website for more information.

Service pupil premium

The Department for Education introduced the service pupil premium (SPP) in April 2011 in recognition of the specific challenges children from service families face and as part of the commitment to delivering the armed forces covenant.

State schools, academies and free schools in England, which have children of service families in school years Reception to Year 11, can receive the SPP funding. It is designed to assist the school in providing the additional support that these children may need and is currently worth £350 per service child per year who meets the eligibility criteria. To read more on SPP, visit the GOV.UK website.

Adult education

The Derby Adult Learning Service (DALS) offers discounts to serving members of the armed forces and veterans on a range of courses, supporting adults to continue their education.

More information about DALS and a full list of courses available, along with start dates, can be found on the DALS website.
